Gainsborough Studios was originally built as a Power Station for the Great Northern and City Railway it was later converted into a Film Studios, where it produced a number of popular films from 1924-1951 including several of Alfred Hitchcocks films such as The Lady Vanishes (1938). Stars such as Margaret Lockwood, James Mason, Stewart Granger, Patricia Roc, Ivor Novello and Gracie Fields also worked in the studios during this time.
In 2002 the studios were demolished and apartments designed by architects Munckenbeck and Marshall were built incorporating some walls of the original Power Station. A large sculpture of Hitchcocks head was erected in memory of the late director which resides in the courtyard serving as an early reminder of his work there.
